Chief's Challenge
The ‘Chief’s Challenge’ is an initiative of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Victoria, aimed at raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics Victoria and supporting people living with an intellectual disability (ID).
The annual Chief’s Challenge is now in its fourth year. Chief’s Challenge events are held in the lead up to and on December 3 each year, aligning with International Day of People With Disability (IDoPwD).
The ‘Chief’s Challenge’ encourages all areas of Victoria Police to undertake an activity or event which demonstrates their commitment to building relationships and developing meaningful connections with the intellectual disability community.
Collectively these activities seek to build trust and confidence in police and deliver improved community safety outcomes.
The key priorities for the ‘Chief’s Challenge’ are to:
- Raise awareness of intellectual disability within the policing environment
- Promote inclusion of people with an intellectual disability
- Improved localised connections of police with special schools and Special Olympics Victoria clubs and programs
- Build awareness and understanding of local police within the ID sector and broader community (Breaking down barriers and misapprehension of authority figures)
- Raise funds for LETR Victoria and Special Olympics Victoria clubs or disability support agencies and services in your area.
Torch Run encourage you to organise an activity no matter how small to promote community engagement in your local area. It can be as simple as a visit to the local Specialist School or organising a tour of your local station.
Activities are judged by the LETR committee and the winning event/s recognised with an award so please get on board and register your event. Don’t forget to take and submit photos.
